To get cited by AI engines, you need four things in place: crawler access, answer-first content, entity clarity, and third-party corroboration. The engines differ — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews each pick sources differently — but those four foundations feed all of them. Here is the engine-by-engine playbook.
Google AI Overviews
AI Overviews draw overwhelmingly from pages that already rank in the top organic results for the query. Your route in: win classic rankings for the exact question, structure the page answer-first, and keep schema truthful. Local queries (“best X in Kochi”) also pull from Google Business Profile — keep it complete and active.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT cites via its browsing/search layer (OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User) and leans on Bing-flavoured results plus well-known entities. Allow its crawlers in robots.txt, get your brand facts consistent everywhere (site, LinkedIn, directories), and publish content that answers commercial questions directly — comparison posts and “how much does X cost” pages do disproportionately well. We covered the full checklist in our earlier guide to getting mentioned in ChatGPT.
Perplexity
Perplexity is the most citation-transparent engine — every answer shows sources. It favours fresh, specific, well-structured pages and crawls aggressively via PerplexityBot. Recency matters: updated timestamps and current-year references genuinely move the needle. Tables, statistics and direct definitions get quoted verbatim.
Gemini
Gemini leans on Google’s index and knowledge graph, so entity work pays most here: organisation schema, consistent NAP data, Wikipedia/Wikidata presence where achievable, and authoritative mentions. If Google understands who you are, Gemini can recommend you.
The cross-engine checklist
Allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and Amazonbot in robots.txt. Publish an llms.txt file. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences of every key page. Match schema to visible content exactly — hidden-text tricks get sites penalised. Add one verifiable statistic or concrete fact per page; AI engines preferentially quote numbers. Then track monthly: ask each engine your ten target questions and log who gets cited.
FAQ
How long until AI engines cite a new website?
Perplexity and ChatGPT browsing can cite fresh pages within days or weeks of crawl access. Google AI Overviews and Gemini usually require organic ranking and entity strength first, so expect months for competitive queries.
Can I pay to appear in AI answers?
Not organically. Some engines are testing sponsored placements, but citations in organic AI answers cannot be bought — they are earned through structure, authority and relevance.
How do I measure AI citations?
Manually query each engine monthly with your target questions, or use an AI-visibility platform such as IndexGraph.ai to score readiness and track brand mentions across engines.
